Laser Treatment for Urinary Incontinence in Ankara

Laser Treatment for Urinary Incontinence in Ankara

What is urinary incontinence?

Stress urinary incontinence is defined as the leakage of urine that occurs when intra-abdominal pressure increases, such as during laughing, sneezing, coughing, straining, or lifting heavy objects.

Its prevalence increases with age and develops due to reduced pelvic floor support at the bladder neck. In the past, surgical sling procedures that supported the bladder neck were the only option for treating stress incontinence. However, with advances in laser technology, non-surgical treatments are now available for suitable patients.

Laser energy stimulates the production of new collagen and activates elastin fibers. This restores the lost support at the bladder neck and helps treat stress incontinence symptoms.

What is stress urinary incontinence?

Stress urinary incontinence is the leakage of urine that occurs when intra-abdominal pressure increases, such as during laughing, straining, sneezing, or lifting heavy objects. It develops due to reduced pelvic floor support at the bladder neck and may be accompanied by bladder or bowel prolapse.

The degree of vaginal wall prolapse helps determine the appropriate treatment. In cases of stress incontinence with mild vaginal prolapse, laser treatment offers a non-surgical option.

Vaginal Laser Use in Urinary Incontinence Treatment

Urinary incontinence is a broad topic, but in suitable cases of stress incontinence—urine leakage that occurs when intra-abdominal pressure increases, such as during coughing, laughing, sneezing, or straining—non-surgical treatment with vaginal laser therapy can be performed.

With vaginal laser treatment, laser energy is applied to the bladder neck and mid-urethral region to stimulate collagen production and restore the altered bladder neck angle. According to the literature, vaginal laser treatment for stress incontinence has been successfully performed, with the oldest treated patient reported to be 92 years old.

Laser therapy is a reliable option for older patients in whom surgical risks are higher.

Laser Urinary Incontinence Treatment Sessions

Laser urinary incontinence treatment can be scheduled as three sessions spaced four weeks apart, or two sessions spaced four weeks apart with a third session six months later. Additional sessions may be needed every 2–3 years depending on the patient’s symptoms.

How is Laser Urinary Incontinence Treatment Performed?

Laser treatment is a non-surgical option for urinary incontinence. The ablative effect of laser energy on the tissue stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis, strengthening the connective tissue support beneath the bladder neck.

Using a laser probe, shots are applied to the vaginal walls corresponding to 11–12 o’clock and 1 o’clock positions. The laser heats the tissue, and the ablative effect stimulates collagen production. The procedure is typically repeated 2–3 times at one-month intervals. Depending on symptoms, follow-up sessions may be needed in subsequent years.

Is Laser Treatment for Urinary Incontinence Risky?

Laser treatment for urinary incontinence is not considered a risky procedure.
