What is Colposcopy?

Colposcopy is a procedure where the cervix is examined in detail under a microscope with magnification of 15-40 times. After applying acetic acid or Lugol’s solution to the cervix, a waiting period follows. If any areas turn white after applying acetic acid or do not stain with Lugol's solution, a biopsy is taken from these suspicious areas and sent to pathology. This allows for the diagnosis of precancerous or cancerous lesions related to HPV.

When is Colposcopy Necessary?

Colposcopy is necessary in cases where suspicious areas are seen in the cervix, such as increased vascularization, punctation, mosaic pattern, or leukoplakia during routine gynecological exams. It is also recommended if atypical cells are found in a smear result, if high-risk HPV is detected through an HPV test, if there is postcoital bleeding (bleeding after sexual intercourse),if repeated smear tests return insufficient results, if inflammatory results persist despite treatment, for monitoring cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN),or if there are precancerous lesions in the vulva and vagina.

How to Prepare for Colposcopy?

No special preparation is required before a colposcopy. The procedure should be performed after menstruation and after treating any existing infections.

How is Colposcopy Performed?

Colposcopy is performed by examining the cervix with a special microscope system called a colposcope after appropriate vaginal cleaning. Following the application of acetic acid or Lugol's solution, the cervix is re-examined with the colposcope. If suspicious areas are seen during the colposcopy, a biopsy is taken. The biopsy site is then checked for bleeding and cauterized if necessary. The biopsy sample is sent to pathology, and treatment is planned according to the pathology results.

Is Colposcopy the Same as Biopsy?

Colposcopy is the examination of the cervix with a special microscope at 15-40 times magnification. If suspicious areas are seen during this examination, a biopsy is taken. A biopsy is the process of removing suspicious areas using surgical tools or a loop-shaped cautery device.

Private Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a procedure that can be comfortably performed in a private clinic. Colposcopy is performed using an advanced microscope system called a colposcope after inserting a speculum on a gynecological examination table. Anesthesia is not required during the colposcopy procedure. However, anesthesia may be necessary during the biopsy if suspicious areas are found during the colposcopy.

How Long Does Colposcopy Take?

The patient is positioned on the examination table for the colposcopy procedure. After inserting the speculum, the cervix is examined directly with the colposcope and then re-examined after applying various stains and solutions. This preparation and examination take about 10 minutes. Taking a biopsy from suspicious areas and controlling bleeding takes an additional 5-10 minutes.

Does Colposcopy Hurt?

Colposcopy begins like a routine gynecological examination and involves examining the cervix with a special microscope system. It can be considered an extension of a gynecological examination and is not a painful procedure.

Is Anesthesia Required During Colposcopy?

Anesthesia is not required for colposcopy because it is not a painful or painful procedure. However, if a biopsy is likely to be needed, or if a biopsy is required after the examination, preparations for anesthesia can be made.

Bleeding After Colposcopy

Colposcopy involves examining the cervix with a microscope system and is not a procedure that causes bleeding. However, if a biopsy is taken during colposcopy due to the detection of suspicious areas, bleeding may occur at the biopsy site. This bleeding can be controlled with cauterization. Light bleeding may continue for up to a week after the procedure.

What Can Be Seen During Colposcopy?

During colposcopy, abnormal vascularization, punctation (spot-like appearance of blood vessels),mosaic patterns, and white leukoplakia areas can be seen in the cervix. Areas that appear white after applying acetic acid (acetowhite) and those that do not stain with Lugol's solution (Lugol-negative areas) indicate cellular changes. In advanced cancer cases, ulcerated areas or mass-like formations may be observed.

What Do Colposcopy Results Mean?

Suspicious areas seen during colposcopy through direct observation or after applying acetic acid and Lugol's solution require a biopsy. A definitive diagnosis is made after pathological examination of the biopsy. Treatment is planned according to the biopsy results. In the presence of low-grade lesions, a follow-up process begins. In high-grade lesions or if the biopsy shows lesion involvement at the borders, a more extensive removal of the cervix may be necessary.
